Hello Rhett,
Sometimes you have make decisions…will I play now or do my homework? Will I play with Paul or Kat or alone? Will I play basketball or football? Will I zonk that game character to go on to the next level or will I save another character? Some of those decisions have just a little consequence, (maybe just whether you will have more fun), but other decisions have very serious consequence. Some decisions, like will I obey God or someone else, may effect your entire life and eternity.
The wise men who came to see baby Jesus had a very serious decision to make. Would they obey the famous King Herod who had the power to take off their heads or would they obey the warning in their dream? We know the men were smart because they knew to follow the star that had been predicted by prophets. They knew the scrolls said the star would appear when a king was born in Bethlehem of Judah. When they went to the palace of King Herod in the country of Judah, they discovered that it was not his son and that King Herod did not even know anything about it. In fact he was disturbed about the information that even his advisors did not know! Rather than giving them information, King Herod met with them secretly to try to find out on the sly what these foreigners knew.
Then King Herod commanded them to come back and inform him about the new baby that was predicted to become king. He told a big lie!! He told them that he wanted to worship this new king. Because of a divine warning in a dream, the traveling men decided not of obey King Herod but to take another trail back to their own country. That is why they were wise…..they obeyed God rather than a man, even the powerful, wicked King Herod,(in history called Herod the Great). Would you agree that their wisdom from God also made them brave? For more details of this exciting story read Matt. 3.
Matt. 3:12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to
Herod, they departed for their own country another way.
Perhaps you will pray, “Thank you, Dear God, for keeping the men who came to see Jesus safe and for giving them wisdom. I pray that I will be wise, also, by following your Word instead of lies told by important people”.
